Japanese submarine collides off Pacific coast

The Soryu, a Japanese submarine with the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (海上自衛隊, Kaijō Jieitai), crashed into a commercial ship on Monday. At the time, the 275-ft long submarine was on a training exercise. The crash took place near to Kochi prefecture. As a result, the Soryu’s antenna mast and some communication equipment were damaged. The crew had to use a cellphone to report the incident. Three crew members received minor injuries.

Nobuo Kishi, the Japanese defence minister, said that the collision was “extremely regrettable”.

An investigation is now under way into the collision.
